Mt. Kenya Trekking via Chogoria Route

Ascend to Point Lenana, third-highest summit in Africa
Overview

overview

Bamboo rain forest, high altitude lakes (tarns), exotic equatorial vegetation and birdlife, alpine meadows, and summit day views as distant as Ethiopia and Kilimanjaro make this Mount Kenya trekking experience one of the most beautiful expeditions in the mountains of East Africa!

On the Chogoria Route, pass through the Gorges Valley, a major feature with much wildlife in the forest, including monkeys in the trees; safari ant columns crossing the track; and the potential for seeing elephant, buffalo, and leopard, among other mammals.

  • Day 3: Lake Ellis

In the early morning, you meet your porters and begin the hike through the equatorial rainforest.   This forest is home to the elephant, cape buffalo, and leopard.  You may also be fortunate enough to see Colobus monkeys on our way.  After a picnic lunch at 8,000 feet, spend the afternoon hiking up through bamboo forest, then through montane forest glades to our camp on the shore of Lake Ellis.  You arrive at your camp in time for lunch.  After a short siesta, take a short acclimitazation hike in the afternoon to the top of nearby Mugi Hill before returning to camp at dusk.

  • Day 4: Hall Tarns

Today is spent traversing the eastern moorlands of Mount Kenya along the edge of the Nithi Gorge.  Enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking this beautiful gorge above Vivienne Falls.  In the afternoon, hike up the ridge of the Nithi to your private camp at Hall Tarns at 14,500 feet.  You will also hike the short distance to the edge of The Temple, a large overhanging buttress overlooking Lake Michaelson, close to Hall Tarns.  Near the track head, a small bridge crosses the Nithi stream.  Following the stream downriver leads to The Gates Waterfall.  The path then heads up a ridge above the Gorges Valley, with stunning views to the peaks, Lake Michaelson, The Temple, and across the valley to Delamere and Macmillan peaks.  On today's hike, you will also see some of the grandest views on Mount Kenya, where the Nithi Gorge plunges several hundred feet below to the banks of Lake Michaelson.

  • Day 5: Point Lenana Summit

Breaking camp at about 4:00 am, leave the vegetation of Hall Tarns behind and enter the Alpine Zone, a strange world of rock, ice, and serene mountain lakes.  Today you summit Point Lenana (16,355 feet), the third highest peak on the mountain.  If the day is clear, you will be able to see as far north as Ethiopia, with Kilimanjaro also frequently visible some 250 miles to the south.  From the summit, descend to Old Moses camp for your overnight, with a picnic breakfast at Shipton's Camp along the way.
