Toubkal Trekking

Explore the High Atlas Mountains
Overview

overview

Explore the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco on foot -- trekking is one of the best adventures you can plan in Morroco's lovely, warm summer -- or any time from June through October.  This trip explores the Berber villages and trails in the vicinity of Jbel Toubkal, the highest mountain in north Africa, at more than 13,300 feet, with starting and ending points in Marrakech.  Customizing allows you to make arrangements of 2-7 days and allows you to combine trekking with time in Morocco's historic, colorful, and fascinating cities.  We have laid out one example here, an 11-day trip, that illustrates one way to trek (for about a week), starting in Marrakech, and ending with a few days there to explore Morocco's city of wonders.  Contact us to set up your dream excursion.

The lodging on this 11-day sample offers a sampling that ranges from comfortable tents to mountain lodges to a country gite to an atmospheric and comfortable riad (manor home) in Marrakech's old medina.  Enjoy!

  • Day 2: Marrakech / Trekking Imlil to Tacheddirt
Load up the mules with gear and set off on your trek

We leave Marrakech after breakfast and drive to Imlil (elevation 5,700') via Asni.  Imlil is the principal trailhead for walkers and the place where we meet our mule team.  Once all our gear is loaded, we begin walking along the valley toward Tacheddirt, some five miles from Imlil.  Soon the trail begins to rise as we climb to the pass at Tizi 'n Tamatert (7,500'), then descend to the pretty village of Ouanestra (7,200'), from which we head onward another half hour or so to Tacheddirt (7,600'), where we set up camp near the river.  Today's total is four hours of walking.

Leave Tacheddirt for the next camp

After breakfast in camp, we begin a long, slow ascent to the pass at Tizi Likemt (11,700') where, at the top, we enjoy our first fine view of the Toubkal Massif before beginning a long downhil descent to the village of Azib Likemt (7,200'), where we'll set up camp for the night.  Totay's total is five hours of walking.

  • Day 4: Trekking Azib Likemt to Amsouzart
Enjoy panoramic views of the Toubkal Massif from the trail

This day is long, but rather easy as our route passes through many interesting landscapes.  From Tizi 'n Ououraine (10,200'), enjoy further views of the Toubkal Massif, including the summit, the east face and the Ifni Dome (12,700').  The trail leads on toward Amsouzert (5,600'), one of the most striking villages in the region, where we spend the night in a local gite (farmhouse cottage).  Totay's total is six hours of walking.

  • Day 5: Trekking Amsouzrt to Ifni Lake
Trek through the pass to Ifni Lake

West of Amsouzert are several charming small villages which we explore as we make our way toward Ifni Lake (7,500'), the only lake in the Toubkal Massif.  It's a memorable sight, surrounded by rocky mountains and giant rock piles, and it's unusually deep as well.  We expect to arrive by lunchtime, then spend the afternoon relaxing by the shore and the night camping nearby.  Today's total is four hours of walking.

  • Day 6: Trekking Ifni Lake to Toubkal Base Camp
Head up from Ifni Lke to higher elevations

By now, everyone should be acclimatized and ready to tackle the most challenging part of the trek, making our way along a steep path leading up a seemingly endless scree slope.  After a fashion, we reach the pass at Tizi n' Ouanoums (12,000'), a narrow ledge between two huge shafts of rock.  From here, it's a long switchback descent to Nelther Refuge (10,500'), where we set up camp for the night.  Today's total is six hours of walking.

  • Day 7: Base Camp Trek to Summit and Back
After summiting, enjoy a well-deserved night's sleep at Iminouassif Guesthouse

We leave before dawn, following a well-worn route to the summit of Toubkal (13,700').  If conditions are good, the climb to the summit should take more than 2-3 hours, where we'll enjoy beautiful views of the entire Atlas range and the Marrakech plains beyond.  Returning to base camp, we then descend fairly rapidly to the villages of Sidi Chamharouch and Aremd, before walking to the Mizane River along a well-forested trail to the trailhead at Imlil, where we'll overnight in a guesthouse.  Today's total is nine hours of walking -- you'll sleep well tonight!
