Four-day Gorilla Adventure

Experience the Mountain Gorillas in native habitat as an add-on to your longer safari

If you're going to be in Africa, trekking in search of mountain gorillas is a must-do.  This 4-day adventure in the Virunga Mountains of Parc National de Volcans offers two opportunities to hike the forests in search of these gentle giants.   Those choosing a single gorilla trek will have time to search for golden monkeys, or visit the nearby lakes or villages.

  • Day 1: from kigali into the virunga mountain range
Get ready for gorilla viewing tomorrow.

Depart from Kigali with your expert guide.  Journey through the beautiful terraced hills that characterize much of Rwanda's landscape. Climb gradually to the base of the spectacular volcanoes of the Virunga Range, noting the five nearest peaks rising high above the verdant countryside. Arrive at the magnificent Volcanoes Virunga Lodge.

  • Day 2: gorilla tracking in parc national des volcans
Gorilla trekking is an indescribable experience.

Track the gorillas in Parc National des Volcans, hiking in a group of eight through rich and dramatic mountain forest on the slopes of the Virungas. Rangers will have pre-scouted the approximate location of the gorilla groups. Hikes may be relatively easy and short or longer and more difficult. Staff make their best attempt to match visitors with an appropriate level of challenge, although there are no guarantees.  Once you reach the gorillas, you enjoy a full hour in close proximity. Return to base for a late lunch.

  • Day 3: parc national des volcans and surrounds

Many travelers opt for a second day of gorilla tracking (booked in advance, at additional cost), although there are other fascinating options as well: track the endangered golden monkey; trek to Dian Fossey's grave and the gorilla cemetery, the final resting place of Fossey's favorite gorilla, Digit; visit a local village, school or community project; or, relax on the shores of Lake Kivu.

  • Day 4: kigali
Say farewell to these magnificent creatures.

Your safari ends with your return to Kigali. We advise booking an evening departure flight. This allows time for touring Kigali. and visiting the market if this is your interest. Most travelers also choose to spend some time at the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center, a moving and inspiring tribute which is a museum as well.
