Geared toward the nature-oriented traveler, the South Africa Adventure provides the perfect combination of scenery, culture, and wildlife in one of the most interesting countries on earth. Visit the historic mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest, before moving on to Kruger National Park, the nation’s largest game reserve. Search for the big five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino), as well as many other species of flora and fauna within the variety of parks and reserves that you will visit on this adventure. Mix in an assortment of cultural opportunities in Zululand and the famous Route 62 wine route, and the South African Adventure is an all-encompassing nature and culture experience.

  • Day 1: Arrive Johannesburg

    Upon arrival in Johannesburg, you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel for your overnight.

  • Day 2: Mpumalanga Province (Blyde River)

    Depart from your hotel in Johannesburg after breakfast for your drive through the scenic Mpumalanga Province. Spend the afternoon in the historic mining town of Pilgrim's Rest.

  • Days 3-4: Kruger National Park

    Spend the morning viewing the spectacular Blyde River Canyon and Bourkes potholes en route to the famous Kruger National Park. The largest game reserve in South Africa stretches north to south over approximately 500 km and is home to the Big Five (lion, African elephant, Cape Buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros), as well as numerous other species of fauna and flora. Early morning and late afternoon game drives are undertaken in search of the numerous animals inhabiting the park. An optional night drive or game walk is also available (booked locally at own expense).

    Approximately 6 hours drive (200 km) with Blyde River Canyon & Bourke's Luck potholes stops.

  • Day 5: Milwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Swaziland

    Departing Kruger we head for the landlocked mountain Kingdom of Swaziland.  Visit the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the Royal Reserves and part of the kingdom’s commitment to wildlife preservation. Afterward visit the colorful local Swazi market with the afternoon free for optional excursions (booked locally at own expense), which might include a tour of the local village, a guided nature walk, or the like.

  • Days 6-7: Zululand

    From your base in Zululand, rich in both cultural history and wildlife, you will have a game drive in the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, famous for its contributions to saving the endangered rhino.  All the rest of the Big Five game - cape buffalo, elephant, lion and leopard can also be found here.

  • Days 8-9: Drakensberg Mountains

    Departing after breakfast, we follow the Indian Ocean coastline through KwaZulu-Natal before heading inland to the Drakensberg Mountains., the tallest mountain range in Southern Africa. Our lodge is situated in the Northern Berg at the foot of the Amphitheatre. The Tugela Falls - the second tallest in the world, plunge 948 meters from the amphitheatre's cliff tops.  While here, enjoy guided walks in the mountains or just relaxing in the spectacular surroundings.

  • Day 10: Gariep Dam

    Continuing along the foot of the mountains, we enter the Free State Province. Our lodge is has stunning views overlooking the Gariep Dam, the largest reservoir in South Africa.

  • Day 11: Cradock

    The historical town of Cradock, the frontier town at the eastern edge of the Great Karoo, is the next stop.  Time is spent visiting the musuems and buildings, including Die Tuishuise, an elegant collection of beautifully-restored Victorian-era craftsmen’s houses. More than two dozen Tuishuise houses line Market Street up to the grand, old colonial Victoria Manor hotel from the days of Cecil John Rhodes, Olive Schreiner, and the myriad adventurers who passed through on the way to the hinterland.

  • Days 12-13: Addo Elephant National Park

    Found in the Sundays River Valley near the Zuurberg Range, Addo Elephant National Park supports lion, large herds of elephant, and numerous antelope species. We enjoy a game drive and the have the opportunity for an optional elephant-back safari (own expense).

  • Days 14-15: The Garden Route

    Following the coastline, we explore the famous Garden Route, situated between the forests of the Tsitsikamma and the winelands of the Western Cape. A full day is available to explore the charming towns of the area or a variety of optional activities (own expense), including a sunset cruise to the famous Heads, whale watching (in season), and scenic walks.

  • Days 16-17: Cape Town

    Our journey takes us through a picturesque fruit and wine growing valley known as the longest wine route in the world, Route 62 and then via Sir Lowry's pass, affording us our first view of beautiful Cape Town.  En route, we visit the Groot Constantia wine farm for a cellar tour and wine tasting, arriving in Cape Town in the late afternoon. The following morning, we depart at 8:00 a.m. for a full day peninsular tour. Driving along the Atlantic seaboard via Hout Bay and Chapmans Peak, visit the Cape Point Nature Reserve.  Return to your hotel via the Indian Ocean coastline.  Time permitting, visit Boulder's Beach to see the African Penguin colony (own expense).  A morning or afternoon cable car ascent up Table Mountain is included on the second day (weather dependent). Dinners can be enjoyed at the bustling waterfront (own expense).
