Day 1: arrive & ponta delgada tour

Welcome to the Azores! You'll likely arrive on a red eye from the east coast, so your adventure begins the day you arrive. You'll be picked up from the airport in Ponta Delgada and transferred to your hotel, where you'll have a short welcome meeting. Your room will be ready for you, so you can have some time to rest up from your overnight flight.

Around noon, regroup in the lobby where you'll get all the information you need for the week: guide introductions, itineraries, scheduling, meals, weather forecasts, equipment, program adjustments (if needed), flight schedules, transfers, and hotels.

Then it's time for lunch on the Ponta Delgada waterfront. After, take a stroll on a coastline walking tour. As you make your way back to the hotel for the evening, stop at some of the main attractions including Portas da Cidade, Matriz Church, City Hall, São Bráz Military Fort, São Francisco Square, and the António Borges Botanical Garden.

After, enjoy a traditional family-style welcome dinner in the center of the city, then return to your hotel for the night.

Day 2: sete cidades kayaking & ferraria swimming

Leave your hotel after breakfast and head to the Sete Cidades volcanic area—Sete Cidades Lake is one of the most famous and legendary lakes the the archipelago. Make your way to the bottom of the crater, where you'll have the option of kayaking in the lake or hiking or biking along the shoreline. There is no other way to experience the amazing energy and beauty of this spectacular area! After, enjoy a typical Azorean picnic lunch served on the lakeshore.

Next, drive along the coast and stop in Ferraria. Here, if the tide permits, take a swim in oceanic pools heated by the surrounding volcanic vents. This experience is a great way to relax after your morning activities.

Later today, get ready for a gourmet dinner with locally sourced ingredients at a seafront restaurant.

Day 3: whale watching & cultural tour

Another exciting day awaits you today! First up—whales and dolphins!

Due to its well-preserved and diverse natural beauty, the Azores archipelago is one of the best whale watching destinations in the world, with 25 species of whales and dolphins year round. Before the boat trip begins, biologists will give you a briefing to explain which cetacean species can be observed, safety measures aboard, how to respect the animals, historical facts, and rules of observation at sea. Then it's time for the fun to begin; although nature offers no guarantees, whales and dolphins are regularly seen during this boat ride, along with turtles, seabirds and other marine life. After the three-hour tour, return to Ponta Delgada for lunch in a local restaurant.

Note that each passenger is required to wear a life vest, and if needed, rain jackets and rain pants will be provided as well.

In the afternoon, take a step back in time for a glimpse into the culture and history of the islands. You'll visit a local farm and experience life as it was 50 years ago as you bake fresh bread or biscuits, milk a cow, plough the earth and participate in traditional activities and games. This is a fun-filled activity that is perfect for anyone wanting to connect with local traditions.

Enjoy dinner at the hotel, then rest up for an early start tomorrow.

Day 4: fly to faial island / city & volcano tours

You have an early pickup today (typically 6am) so you can get to the airport in time for your flight to Faial Island, where the city of Horta is located. Upon arrival, you'll be picked up and taken to the starting point of your Horta walking tour. 

During your tour, visit the city's famous marina, which is a main stopping point for yachts crossing the Atlantic. Its walls and walkways are covered in paintings created by visitors who noted the names of their vessels, crews, and the years in which they visited. Next, make your way to the Scrimshaw Museum, which is on top of Peter’s Café, known as a storytelling venue where you can hear tales of whalers and sailors. Here, enjoy Peter's special Gin and Tonic, followed by a nice meal.

Next, it's time to visit Caldeira, a massive volcanic crater with beautiful views over the sea and Pico Island. Stretch your legs on a short “walk on the moon” hike along the Capelinhos Volcano, noticing the uniquely preserved vegetation until you reach the area affected by the most recent eruption. Learn more about the volcano's impact on the island when you briefly stop at the interpretation center, before moving on to the historic lighthouse that was rebuilt since the last eruption in 1957. Here, enjoy an amazing view of the entire island, with incredible contrasting landscapes of black volcanic rocks, sand, and the blue ocean.

After time to rest at your hotel, meet your guide in the lobby for a short walk to dinner, where you'll meet the restaurant's owner and hear his stories about sailing expeditions that included circumnavigating the globe by sailboat—twice!

Day 5: pico island wine tours

Today is all about the wine of the Azores. You'll be picked up at the hotel and transferred to the port, where you'll head out via ferry to Pico Island, home to the highest mountain of Portugal, Mount Pico, at 7,713'.

Your tour begins with a walk through the island's vineyards, Vinhas da Criação Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you will learn about this unique style of vineyard and the varietal found on the island. Afterwards, visit the Wine Museum with its beautiful architecture and outdoor garden with giant Dracaena draco. Next, it's time to taste the exquisite Pico wine in a typical winery with local wine production. A delicious traditional meal and wines will be waiting for you to enjoy!

After lunch, visit a few coastal landscapes, then take time to relax in a natural swimming pool or just enjoy the views over the mountains and Faial and São Jorge Islands.

Tonight enjoy a unique restaurant in Horta where everybody will cook their own meal on hot stones. Choose from fresh fish, local seafood, and meat. Then ferry back to your hotel to rest for the night.

Day 6: fly to são miguel / jeep safari

Enjoy a leisurely morning before heading to the airport for your flight to São Miguel Island. Upon arrival, you'll be picked up and begin a jeep safari on the north coast of the island.

Pass through streams and the beautiful Salto do Cabrito waterfall. Spend some time at the natural reserve of Fire Lake, a pristine blue lake in a volcanic crater. The lake is one of the most stunning in the Azores. Descend to the south coast where a nice surprise awaits you. After, return to the hotel where you will have time to enjoy the botanical garden and its outdoor thermal hot tub.

Dinner will be a wonderful traditional barbeque at a scenic spot overlooking the sea.

Day 7: volcano oven cooking & furnas

Meet after breakfast for a fun day cooking in volcano ovens and discovering Furnas, a truly magical place. 

Start off with an easygoing walk through the village. Along the way, stop at a local market where your guide will help you pick out all the ingredients that you need to cook tonight's dinner. Then, with your ingredients selected, head out for a brief driving tour of the lake. 

Stop at Caldeiras da Lagoa das Furnas (Furnas Lake Calderas), the place where you'll cook dinner with the famous “cozido das Furnas." Yes, it's only morning, but your meal will take 6+ hours to cook so it's good to start early. A cooking class will teach you how to prepare the special “cozido meal,” which is cooked underground using only the steam of the Earth. 

While dinner is cooking, visit Terra Nostra Botanical Park and enjoy a picnic lunch. Tour the park to discover the amazing centenary trees and plants of the region.

Later, return to the Furnas to see your dinner being taken from the ground, and participate in the final dinner preparations before enjoying the product of your labor. As you enjoy the unique meal, look back on the fantastic week of exploration in this spectacular corner of the world.

Day 8: tea plantation & departure

It's time to say goodbye to the Azores, but before you get back to Ponta Delgada for your international flight, one more stop... a trip to the only tea plantation in Europe. Visit the working Tea Factory and sip the lovely tea before heading out. Then if time allows before your flight, stroll around the city center of Ponta Delgada to purchase some final souvenirs, and enjoy lunch in a local restaurant.

Expenses covered

Normally, our stated land costs include the cost of all guides, leaders, permits obtained after arrival, lodging accommodations, food and entry fees as specified, and all surface transportation associated with the planned itinerary. We do our best to avoid increasing prices after receipt of your deposit, but, rarely, factors beyond our control might require us to change our prices without prior notice, even after you have signed up. 

Expenses not covered

Costs not included in the price may include: meals not indicated as included in itineraries; meals prior to arrival in starting cities; transfers, if not arriving or departing on the scheduled group flights; soft drinks, bottled water, and alcoholic beverages; medical expenses, costs of hospitalization, or evacuation from remote areas; laundry; airport departure taxes not included on your airline ticket; accommodations en route to starting cities; visas; airfares; gratuities; and insurance. 

Pricing and Payment

For most group departures, the booking deposit is $500 per person per trip, though for some trips it may be more, as noted in the trip description. The minimum booking deposit requirement for custom trips is $800 per person, and this deposit is non-refundable. A trip-planning fee of $250 per itinerary is also charged to cover costs of preparing itinerary proposals for custom trips. This fee is credited to the cost of the trip, but is nonrefundable if you do not take the trip. Custom travel during holiday seasons may require a deposit prior to trip confirmation.

For both group departures and custom trips, a second deposit of $1,000 per person is due 120 days prior to departure or at the time of booking for reservations made fewer than 120 days before departure. The balance as shown on your invoice is due 60 days prior to departure regardless of whether extensions or other arrangements are pending. Late payments may jeopardize confirmation of your itinerary and in some cases may result in additional fees. If we have not received final payment 30 days prior to departure your reservation may be canceled and subject to our Cancellation & Refund Policy stated in the complete Terms & Conditions.

We accept payments by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or check drawn on a U.S. bank account. Payment for airfare is required at the time of ticketing. Discounts that may be available for some trips are not available toward bookings made through travel agencies.​

Airfare

We can help you secure air travel arrangements to correspond with land travel booked through Journeys International. We work with an airfare consolidator to assist in booking the flights that suit your needs. If you decide to make your own flight arrangements, you must provide Journeys International with a complete copy of your itinerary showing departure and arrival flights and times. You should plan to arrange your own air travel if you are using mileage credit or originating outside North America, but please be in touch with our office before you finalize ticketing so that we can help you to coordinate the correct arrival and departure dates and times.

Insurance

When you make your application, we strongly recommend the purchase of comprehensive travel insurance in case of emergency situations. Please contact us for a recommended policy.

Itinerary Change Fee

There will be a $40 fee for changes once an itinerary has been confirmed and approved. Additional cancellation penalties or change fees may apply as per our terms and conditions. The passenger is responsible for such fees.

The cost quoted is the Land Cost and is subject to change. This covers accommodations, transfers, activities, touring, guide services and meals as described in Journeys' Trip Notes. The quoted Land Cost will apply when group size falls in the specified range and when travel is on the indicated dates.

The single supplement is applicable if a roommate is not available or if single accommodation is specifically requested. While single accommodation is not available on all trips, we will try and honor this request whenever possible.

Expenses covered

Normally, our stated land costs include the cost of all guides, leaders, permits obtained after arrival, lodging accommodations, food and entry fees as specified, and all surface transportation associated with the planned itinerary. We do our best to avoid increasing prices after receipt of your deposit, but, rarely, factors beyond our control might require us to change our prices without prior notice, even after you have signed up. 

Expenses not covered

Costs not included in the price may include: meals not indicated as included in itineraries; meals prior to arrival in starting cities; transfers, if not arriving or departing on the scheduled group flights; soft drinks, bottled water, and alcoholic beverages; medical expenses, costs of hospitalization, or evacuation from remote areas; laundry; airport departure taxes not included on your airline ticket; accommodations en route to starting cities; visas; airfares; gratuities; and insurance. 

Pricing and Payment

For most group departures, the booking deposit is $500 per person per trip, though for some trips it may be more, as noted in the trip description. The minimum booking deposit requirement for custom trips is $800 per person, and this deposit is non-refundable. A trip-planning fee of $250 per itinerary is also charged to cover costs of preparing itinerary proposals for custom trips. This fee is credited to the cost of the trip, but is nonrefundable if you do not take the trip. Custom travel during holiday seasons may require a deposit prior to trip confirmation.

For both group departures and custom trips, a second deposit of $1,000 per person is due 120 days prior to departure or at the time of booking for reservations made fewer than 120 days before departure. The balance as shown on your invoice is due 60 days prior to departure regardless of whether extensions or other arrangements are pending. Late payments may jeopardize confirmation of your itinerary and in some cases may result in additional fees. If we have not received final payment 30 days prior to departure your reservation may be canceled and subject to our Cancellation & Refund Policy stated in the complete Terms & Conditions.

We accept payments by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or check drawn on a U.S. bank account. Payment for airfare is required at the time of ticketing. Discounts that may be available for some trips are not available toward bookings made through travel agencies.​

Airfare

We can help you secure air travel arrangements to correspond with land travel booked through Journeys International. We work with an airfare consolidator to assist in booking the flights that suit your needs. If you decide to make your own flight arrangements, you must provide Journeys International with a complete copy of your itinerary showing departure and arrival flights and times. You should plan to arrange your own air travel if you are using mileage credit or originating outside North America, but please be in touch with our office before you finalize ticketing so that we can help you to coordinate the correct arrival and departure dates and times.

Insurance

When you make your application, we strongly recommend the purchase of comprehensive travel insurance in case of emergency situations. Please contact us for a recommended policy.

Itinerary Change Fee

There will be a $40 fee for changes once an itinerary has been confirmed and approved. Additional cancellation penalties or change fees may apply as per our terms and conditions. The passenger is responsible for such fees.
