Celebrate 40 Years of Adventure with Florine Herendeen
Step into the wild with me, Florine Herendeen, as I mark my 40th year with Journeys International by returning to one of my all-time favorite corners of the globe — East Africa. This is not just any safari… it’s an awe-inspiring, once-in-a-lifetime journey into the very heart of nature’s greatest stage. We will also be joined by our favorite longtime safari guide, Mrosso.
From the golden savannas of the Serengeti to the shimmering waters where hippos bathe and crocodiles lurk, this safari promises the ultimate big game adventure. Imagine locking eyes with a lion in the early dawn light, spotting a rare rhino grazing on the horizon, or watching a curious zebra flick its ears in the breeze. Best of all, we’ll trace the path of the migration, a river of wildebeest, zebra, and antelope, as they surge across the plains in one of the most extraordinary spectacles on Earth. We’ll travel in specially outfitted Land Rovers, designed for comfort, safety, and unbeatable views — the perfect roving perch for your camera lens. These rugged vehicles will take us off the beaten track, into the heart of remote landscapes, and up close to wildlife encounters you’ll never forget.
At day’s end, we’ll retreat to intimate safari camps and secluded lodges perfectly placed near wildlife. Picture evenings under starlit skies, the sounds of the bush all around, and the warmth of shared stories over a delicious meal. And because a true journey embraces more than landscapes and wildlife, we’ll also connect with the people who call this region home. Through authentic cultural exchanges, you’ll discover the rich traditions and vibrant heritage that give Tanzania its soul.
Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or embarking on your first safari, this is your invitation to join me on a once-in-a-lifetime celebration — where adventure, connection, and wonder are always just over the next rise. Join us on the classic group departure that hasn’t been offered as a group in over 15 years. This special departure will feature guided walks with a ranger, a night game drive, and visits to a local school. This adventure is sure to be one you’ll want to talk about for years to come!

BDay 2Tarangire National Park
Your first African day dawns, and your true adventure begins!
We depart after breakfast for Arusha National Park, where we have the opportunity for a walk with a ranger. This offers a slower, more intimate way of connecting with the wildlife. The park is nestled at the base of Mt. Meru and features lush forest, lakes, and volcanic craters. We will likely see giraffes, buffalo, dik-dik, Colobus monkeys, and a wide variety of birds. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the park.
After lunch, we depart for Tarangire National Park in our four-wheel-drive vehicle. Tarangire retains an air of undiscovered Africa. You’ll notice the vast number of baobab trees as you enter the park. Colorful birds swoop and strut along the rough paths throughout the year. Wildlife moves freely.
On arrival, look for animals as we drive toward the lodge, beautifully situated on a bluff overlooking the Tarangire River. With your cameras loaded and your binoculars at the ready this afternoon, you will head out for your afternoon game drive. The drivers will be prepared for the best spotting sites based on intel from morning excursions, and this will determine which direction you will head.
At night, Tarangire comes alive with nocturnal wonders. Under the sweep of a spotlight, watch for glowing eyes in the bush, like bushbabies, genets, or hyenas, and experience the park’s wild, mysterious side under a canopy of stars.

CDay 3Tarangire National Park
You will have a full day of game-viewing and exploring Tarangire National Park by starting the day with a walk with a ranger in the early morning for bird watching. Some of the species you might see would include the following:
Lilac-breasted Roller
Superb Starling
Kori Bustard
Secretary Bird
Yellow-collared Lovebird
African Fish Eagle
Red-and-yellow Barbet
Ashy Starling
After lunch, we will continue our safari by vehicle. The park is spectacular in the dry season when many of the migratory species come back to the permanent waters of the Tarangire River. Huge herds of wildebeest, zebras, elephants, and oryx gather to stay in Tarangire until the onset of the rains, when they migrate again to good grazing areas.
The park is also noted for its prolific birdlife, the occasional sighting of cheetah, and the rare African Wild Dog. Return to the Lodge for brunch, relaxing at the camp during the hottest hours of the day, before setting out again in the afternoon. Or you may choose to relax at the lodge and enjoy its facilities.
As a special treat, we will enjoy a walking safari with a ranger in the morning and a night game drive in open vehicles after dark, where the nighttime opens up a hidden world of creatures. If we are lucky, we will see lions, leopards, hyenas, and even African wildcats or even a civet.

DDay 4Tarangire / Lake Eyasi
This morning, we journey westward to Lake Eyasi, a vast, shimmering expanse of soda-rich waters tucked between the rugged Eyasi Escarpment and the forested slopes of the Kidero Mountains. The lake itself shifts in color with the light, reflecting hues of silver and blue, and its seasonal waters attract a remarkable diversity of life. Along the shores, hippos wallow lazily in the shallows, while troops of vervet and baboon monkeys chatter noisily in the trees above. With luck, you may glimpse leopards slipping silently through the bush, their movements as fluid as shadow. Overhead, the skies are alive with birdlife, including brilliant pink flocks of flamingos, elegant storks, and soaring pelicans.
While Lake Eyasi’s wildlife is captivating, the main reason for our journey here will be to meet the local Hadzabe people, among the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa. For nearly 10,000 years, they have thrived in this landscape, living with deep attunement to the rhythms of the land and seasons. Today, we are offered the rare privilege of stepping, respectfully, into their world. Sitting by their fires, watching the skillful crafting of arrows, or joining in a foraging walk, we glimpse a lifestyle unchanged for millennia. It is a moment of connection as stirring and timeless as the vast landscapes that surround Lake Eyasi.

EDay 5 Hadzabe Tribe
After breakfast, meet your local guide, a member of one of the region’s tribes, who will lead you into the lands of the Hadzabe. Closely related to the Kalahari Bushmen and of Cushitic origin, the Hadzabe are among the last true hunter-gatherers in East Africa. They speak a distinctive click-based language, move with the seasons, and still hunt using handmade bows and arrows.
Because of their nomadic lifestyle, the Hadzabe’s exact location can be unpredictable, but your guide will know where to find them — often near the movements of wildlife on which they depend. You’ll spend the day learning about their traditions, tracking skills, and the deep knowledge of nature that sustains their way of life. If conditions allow, you may even visit the caves they use for shelter when not on the hunt.
As you travel through this remote landscape, keep an eye out for smaller antelopes like dik-dik and lesser kudu, as well as the abundant birdlife that thrives here. Return to the lodge for dinner and another restful night surrounded by the quiet beauty of Lake Eyasi.

FDay 6Central Serengeti National Park
Travel further west today toward the legendary Serengeti, but before reaching its sweeping plains you will pause at one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, the Olduvai Gorge. This dramatic rift valley, cut deep into the earth by millennia of erosion, has revealed extraordinary evidence of our earliest human ancestors. It was here that Mary and Louis Leakey unearthed the skull of Zinjanthropus boisei, believed to be nearly 1.8 million years old, and later remains of Australopithecus, a species that vanished over a million years ago. Perhaps most stirring are the 3.6-million-year-old hominin footprints preserved in volcanic ash at Laetoli, proof that early humans once walked upright across these same landscapes.
At the site, enjoy an informative talk from a local guide as you gaze out over the gorge’s rugged layers, each stratum a page from humanity’s deep history. The small but engaging museum offers displays of fossils, stone tools, and photographs that bring these discoveries to life, providing a moving sense of connection to the dawn of mankind.
Leaving Olduvai, the road carries us onward until the first golden expanses of the Serengeti unfold before you. Almost immediately, the park’s reputation for predators becomes clear. On your game drive across the plains toward the central region, you may spot lion prides sprawled in the shade of acacia trees, or cheetahs scanning the horizon from a rocky outcrop. The 5,750 square miles of Serengeti stretch endlessly, dotted with kopjes, river lines, and grasslands alive with wildebeest, zebra, antelope, and a dazzling variety of birds.
Your guide, drawing on years of experience and a keen knowledge of local conditions, will craft your route to maximize the evening’s sightings. You might trace the banks of the Grumeti River, where crocodiles lie in wait and lions often lounge nearby, follow the open savannas of the Gol Kopjes in search of cheetah on the hunt, or wind along the Seronera River, prime territory for elusive leopards draped across tree branches at dusk.
As the light softens into evening, you arrive at your camp, where the sounds of the wild, including distant roars, the chatter of cicadas, and the stirring of night birds will remind you that you are at the heart of one of Earth’s most iconic wildernesses.

GDays 7-8North Serengeti National Park
Enjoy two full days of game viewing in the most famous national park in Africa. Explore the central plains and western hills, where at this time of the year around two million wildebeest, zebra, and a vast assortment of other plains animals congregate to feast on the nutrient-rich grasses.
Optional Experience: Hot Air Balloon Safari over the Serengeti Before dawn, you’ll be driven to the launch site where massive, colorful balloons are slowly brought to life by bursts of flame. As the sun begins to paint the sky, you gently lift off, rising above the golden savanna just as the day’s first light touches the grasslands.
From this breathtaking vantage point, the Serengeti stretches endlessly in every direction, forming a patchwork of acacia woodlands, winding rivers, and open plains dotted with wildlife. Watch as elephants move in family groups below, giraffes cast long morning shadows, and herds of wildebeest flow across the landscape like living rivers. The world feels still and timeless up here.
After an hour in the sky, you’ll drift back to earth for a celebratory champagne breakfast served right in the bush, complete with fresh fruit, pastries, and hot coffee. HDay 9Ngorongoro Crater / Maasai village
As you take your leave of the Serengeti, the day begins with a final morning game drive, offering one more opportunity to witness the drama of this legendary wilderness. Perhaps a pride of lions still lingers near the remains of a night’s hunt, or giraffes stride gracefully across the golden savanna, their silhouettes outlined by the rising sun. The crisp morning air carries the calls of hornbills and the distant lowing of wildebeest, reminding you just how alive these plains are.
From here, your journey continues with a visit to a traditional Maasai village. The Maasai, renowned for their distinctive red shúkà (robes), intricate beadwork, and semi-nomadic way of life, are among East Africa’s most iconic peoples. Stepping into their homestead, you’ll be welcomed by songs and dances that celebrate community and tradition. With openness and pride, the Maasai share stories of their culture, their deep connection to cattle, and the spiritual beliefs that guide their lives on these rugged landscapes. It is a vivid, personal encounter with a people whose resilience and heritage remain closely tied to the land.
In the afternoon, the road ascends into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of breathtaking scale and significance. The highlight here is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” From the rim, the view stretches across an enormous natural amphitheater where nearly 25,000 animals thrive in a unique, self-contained ecosystem. On the crater floor, the Big Five— lion, elephant, endangered black rhino, buffalo, and leopard — share space with vast herds of zebra and wildebeest, pods of hippos wallowing in freshwater pools, and dazzling birdlife that fills the skies.
As evening falls, you arrive at the welcoming Ngorongoro Farm House, a tranquil lodge set amid coffee plantations and lush gardens. Here, you can unwind with a warm meal prepared from fresh local ingredients, reflecting on the day’s remarkable encounters and preparing for tomorrow’s full-day exploration of the crater, one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on earth.

IDay 10Ngorongoro Crater
After breakfast, set out for a full-day descent into the Ngorongoro Crater. Formed nearly three million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed, the crater is now the world’s largest intact caldera, a vast bowl of life where ecosystems exist in miniature. Its varied landscapes, which includes open grasslands, shimmering soda lakes, acacia woodlands, and marshes, all provide refuge for an astonishing concentration of wildlife, estimated at over 25,000 animals.
As you drive across the crater floor, you’ll find yourself in the midst of extraordinary encounters: lions lounging in the morning sun, elephants moving silently through groves of fever trees, and buffalo herds grazing the open plains. With luck, you may glimpse the elusive leopard, slipping through the shadows, or one of the few remaining black rhinos, an endangered species that makes its home here. Wildebeest and zebra form vast, shifting herds, while warthogs scurry through the grass and flamingos gather in pink ribbons along the lake’s edge.
Around mid-day, pause for a picnic lunch in a designated scenic spot, where you can relax under the shade of an acacia and enjoy the sweeping views of this natural amphitheater. The sounds of the wild will provide the perfect background music to accompany your meal.
In the afternoon, continue your exploration across the crater floor, following the wildlife wherever it leads. As the light begins to soften and shadows stretch across the savanna, ascend once more to the crater rim and return to the lodge. Here, surrounded by the tranquility of the highlands, you can unwind, reflect on the trip’s remarkable encounters, and prepare to return home or travel onto the next part of your adventure.

Insurance
While we strongly recommend the purchase of comprehensive travel insurance in case of emergency situations for all of our trips, note that for this particular trip, COMPREHENSIVE TRAVEL INSURANCE IS COMPULSORY FOR ALL PASSENGERS TRAVELLING ON SAFARIS! It is the client’s sole responsibility to ensure that they carry the correct and sufficient comprehensive travel and medical travel insurance for themselves and any dependants/traveling companions. This insurance should cover, but not be limited to, cancellation and curtailment, baggage loss or damage, medical expenses, emergency travel, repatriation with assistance and personal accident. It should be taken out prior to leaving their country of residence. Please contact Journeys for assistance in choosing a policy.
Airfare
We can help you secure air travel arrangements to correspond with land travel booked through Journeys International. We work with an airfare consolidator to assist in booking the flights that suit your needs. If you decide to make your own flight arrangements, you must provide Journeys International with a complete copy of your itinerary showing departure and arrival flights and times. You should plan to arrange your own air travel if you are using mileage credit or originating outside North America, but please be in touch with our office before you finalize ticketing so that we can help you to coordinate the correct arrival and departure dates and times.

There will be a $40 fee for changes once an itinerary has been confirmed and approved. Additional cancellation penalties or change fees may apply as per our terms and conditions. The passenger is responsible for such fees.
