Valparai is a hill station and municipality in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, located 3,500 feet above sea level on the Anaimalai Hills range of the Western Ghats, at a distance of 95 km from Coimbatore and 55 km from Pollachi. While major portions of the land is owned by private tea companies, large forest areas continue to be undeveloped.

Valparai's history dates back to 1846, when Mr. Ramasamy Mudaliyar started a coffee plantation here at his own estate. Before that, Valparai was totally an undeveloped forest area. In 1864, Karnatic Coffee Company began its coffee plantation here but could not make it profitable. In 1890, investors bought a huge portion of land in Valparai from the Madras government and planted tea and coffee; thus, the beginning of the tea industry in this area.
