Great Monuments of Yogyakarta and Borobudur
If you have a few days before or after your Journeys Indonesia trip, you may want to visit Borobudur Temple, the largest Buddhist shrine in the world. Fly to Yogyakarta, in the middle of the island of Java, to explore this beautiful and culturally rich area.
Day 1 Yogyakarta & Prambanan Temple
Upon arrival in Yogyakarta, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. This afternoon, depart for a tour of Prambanan Temple, situated about 17 kms to the east of the city, and set among rich, fertile rice fields. Prambanan is a complex of over 200 temples and shrines. The largest and tallest of the temples is a masterpiece known as “Loro Jongrang,” or “Slender Virgin.” It is covered with wonderful reliefs, which depict the Ramayana episodes. Another appealing aspect of the Loro Jongrang is its glorious symmetry and grace, which make it one of the most elegant and beautiful temples in Java. Today, you will also visit Candi Sewu, Candi Plaosan, and Candi Kalasan. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant. After your sight-seeing tour, you will return to your hotel. In the evening, enjoy dinner with a Ramayana performance at Purawisata. Stay overnight at a local hotel.
Day 2 Yogyakarta & Borobudur
After breakfast, you will be picked up for a full day program visiting the famous Borobudur Temple. The Borobudur Temple is one of the world’s wonders and is located about 42 kms to the north of Yogyakarta. It is the largest Buddhist shrine in the world, and it stands majestically and serenely on the hilltop overlooking verdant rice fields and distant hills. You will also visit the nearby smaller temples of Mendut and Pawon. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant today. After lunch, tour the city and visit such sites as the Sonobudoyo Museum (famous for its collection of Yogya’s antiques and historical relics – museum closed on Monday), the Sultan Palace, a batik factory, and silverworks shop. Later, you will be transferred to your hotel.
Day 3 Yogyakarta/Onward
Today, you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight.
