Lake Como and Milan Extension

Another renowned and exquisite part of Italy, Lake Como, is superb and will astound any traveler. The lake lies deep and cold in a valley of the Italian Alps. At its southern end, a long promontory splits it into two arms. The western side continues as Lake Como, the other as Lake Lecco.
The main city is Varenna, which can be reached by train, and we can organize and reserve tickets for travelers depending on their departure point. This is a charming and very picturesque small town on the shore of Lake Como, from which it’s easy to explore the lake and the surrounding area on your own, using the ferry boats that crisscross the waters (with our tips and suggestions). We recommend at least three nights here to explore places like Bellagio and Menaggio, as well as famous museums like Villa Carlotta and Villa Monastero, or the Vezio Castle.
For those departing from Milan, we recommend spending at least one full day here, or more if attending an opera or show at the renowned La Scala or other theaters. We can organize guided walks, including the Cathedral (one of Leonardo da Vinci’s)

Days 2 & 3 Explore the Lake Como Area
Over the next two days, spend some time exploring the area. Spend the first day in and near Varenna visiting the Piazza San Giorgio, the town center, home to the Church of San Giorgio, built in the 14th century. It hosts many paintings from the late 15th and 16th centuries. Look down, and you will see the solid pavement made entirely of local marble. Walk among the colorful houses that brighten the village, and visit the botanical gardens at Villa Monastero. There are many other options, and even some hiking in the area or relaxing on the beach. A must-do is to take a boat ride on the lake.
On your second day, consider taking the ferry to visit Bellagio, a stunning little town in an unparalleled setting, some say the prettiest town in Europe. On the water and in and around the town, there is an array of astonishingly beautiful villas and large houses. The beautiful area attracts poets and musicians; Liszt and Schubert found inspiration here, as did Gabriele Fauré. Menaggio is another quaint town on the lake, once walled, conquered by the Romans. It is now mainly known as a recreational area and the starting point of several hikes. Villa Carlotta, a Museum and botanical garden, hosts a number of exhibits. It is located in a natural basin in Tremezzo, embraced by the lake and the mountains. Nature and human ingenuity live together in perfect harmony.
Of course, we have a full list of other options that you can explore. Perhaps you’ll want to add some more days in the area.
