I have traveled solo, as a couple, with family, and in groups. Each kind of travel has its own magic. Yet last September, on a small group journey to Greece, I rediscovered something easy to forget: traveling with a group of strangers can create a one-of-a-kind joy and connection that is unlike other types of travel and that no guidebook or destination can offer on its own.

Yes, Greece dazzled me with its ancient ruins, mountain villages, and Mediterranean feasts. But the richest part of the journey wasn’t only the sights or flavors. It was sharing those experiences with seven fellow travelers that would become friends along the way, a thoughtful local leader, and guides who added their own perspective and passion. Together, we created something greater than the sum of its parts. As we traveled through gorgeous Greece, I noticed eight things that made this small group trip especially delightful and memorable.

1. There’s Joy in Others’ WonderAthens urban art

Nothing expands your appreciation like watching someone else light up with passion. In Anogia, on Crete, a fellow traveler who belonged to a woodworker’s guild spotted details in a craftsman’s museum that I would have walked past without notice. Food lovers in our group turned markets and dinners into feasts of learning. One adventurous couple discovered colorful urban art along some side streets in Athens on their own, and they shared their discovery so I could enjoy the beauty too. Their curiosity and delight magnified my own joy.

Our group included a neuroscientist, an engineer, a writer, a dentist, and people at many life stages. Each perspective layered new meaning onto what we saw. At the Parthenon, our engineer’s questions sparked an entirely new conversation that shifted how I understood the site. Seeing Greece through so many lenses gave me insights I never would have discovered alone.

3. Shared Experiences Are Good for Your Brain

Traveling with others doesn’t just feel different; it changes your brain. Shared experiences release oxytocin, dopamine, and endorphins while lowering stress. Social learning boosts memory and empathy. From visiting Delphi to taking a cooking class near Heraklion, being together made every moment feel richer and more memorable.

4. Meals Become MemoriesGroup in Greece

Some of my favorite moments took place gathered around the dinner table. Passing plates family style, sampling gelato together, or laughing over gyros while live music played turned meals into memories. Breaking bread has always been a cornerstone of human connection, and I felt that truth deeply in Greece almost every day.

5. Imperfect Moments Make the Trip Better

From sculpting lopsided clay faces during an art workshop in Athens to following Google Maps in the wrong direction, the imperfect moments bonded us as much as the planned ones. Even long ferry rides became community time instead of lost time. By the end, our inside jokes and shared missteps created a sense of belonging that made the journey unforgettable.

6. Courage Comes Easier in a Group

In a group, it is easier to say yes to things you might otherwise skip. On Crete, I finally tried eating snails for the first time. They were more chewy than I prefer, but I was glad I tried. Free time felt safer too, because we could explore in pairs or small groups and rely on each other for support. Courage grows when it is shared.

One of the greatest treasures I brought home was the collection of travel stories my companions had shared from Antarctica, Oman, and beyond. Their adventures planted seeds for my own future travels and reminded me how the stories we tell can open windows onto the world.

8. You’ll Co-Create a Collective MemoryAthens

By the end of the trip, we carried a collection of memories we had created together and that won’t be soon forgotten. Psychology calls this “collective memory” – experiences remembered more vividly because they are co-created. Exploring the cave believed to be Zeus’s birthplace while our Trip Leader played a traditional string instrument became a shared memory that plays vividly in my mind, and is likely to stay with me and my fellow group members for a long time. These are memories that will connect us throughout our lives.

Travel always leaves its mark, and traveling with a small group adds a dimension that lingers long after the journey ends. The connections we built in Greece, the laughter, the courage, and the collective memory, transformed not just how I experienced the destination but how I now think about travel itself.

When I look back, it is not only the ruins of Delphi or the taste of Cretan olive oil that I remember most vividly. It is the joy of seeing the world through others’ eyes, the bravery that came from trying new things together, and the stories that wove us into a temporary but unforgettable community.
