A diverse journey with just the right mix of history, relaxation, and active adventure, this trip combines explorations of Greece’s ancient cultures with days of fun in the sun – however you define it – on idyllic islands.
Start with a guided tour of Athens, where you’ll see the marble-capped Acropolis, visit the famous Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Acropolis Museum, and much more.
Then you’re off to the islands of either Paros or Naxos, and then on to Santorini, where you can pick your activities to match your every desire. Refresh in the waters, stroll along the stunning beaches, explore charming and historic towns, and if you’re feeling extra adventurous, add trekking, swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling to your days. We selected these islands because of their quaint and historic villages, their beauty and rich culture, as well as the huge variety of activities available, but if there are other islands you’d like to explore, let us know, and we will make it happen.
This itinerary assumes that you want to explore the islands on your own, but if you’d prefer to pre-arrange activities or have a guide with you while on the islands, we can set that up as well.

BDay 2Athens Sightseeing - Acropolis Guided Tour
Spend the morning exploring the Acropolis, the vantage point that offered protection for the ancient city-state and the center of ancient Athenian religious and commercial life. See the fifth-century BC Parthenon, dedicated to the goddess Athena, and the Temple of Nike, which is much smaller than the other temples of the Acropolis. Your history lesson will be completed with a visit to the Acropolis Museum, a museum that the Athenians are most proud of. This museum focuses on the Acropolis archaeological site, built to house all the artifacts on and around the acropolis. The museum itself was carefully built over Roman and Byzantine ruins.
Return to your hotel where you have the rest of the afternoon free to explore Athens on your own. Consider taking a walk through the Plaka neighborhood past Constitution Square, the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier, and the House of Parliament, which was the royal palace until 1935. Nearby is the Temple of Olympian Zeus ruins, Hadrian’s Arch, and Panathinaiko Stadium, the venue for the first Olympic Games.

Kayaking Option
In the afternoon, begin a guided sea kayaking excursion from the black-sand beach of Mesa Pigadia. GDays 7-8Santorini As You Like
Santorini has a beautiful landscape with breathtaking black and red beaches. And the sunsets are spectacular! You’ll have the next two days free to take in the beauty however you’d like, whether relaxing under the sun with a good book, strolling the beaches, swimming in the blue ocean, walking along the caldera from Fira to Oia, horseback riding in Exo Gonia, or scuba diving or snorkeling in the beautiful waters.
You’ll want to be sure to spend time exploring the villages and towns of Santorini such as:
Fira, a stunning town perched on top of a cliff
Katerados, with traditional Santorini architectural styles
Firostefani, for unique views of the volcano
Pyrgos, the highest point on the island with a picturesque monastery
Megalochori, a traditional village with many old Cycladic churches
Akrotiri, an archaeological site with a fascinating history
Mesaria, a market town
Imerovigli, which, along with Katerados and Firostefani, offer stunning sunset views
Your Adventure Specialist can also pre-arrange guided tours of any of these towns, or assist with a visit to a local winery or the Prophet Ilias Monastery. Every town is spectacular and has something to offer, but if you pick just one, consider a day tour in Akrotiri. This 3,500-year-old Minoan town is preserved in volcanic ash much like Pompeii, and here, the ruins are extremely well preserved. Streets, buildings, stairs, and even the second floors of buildings are still visible. See Minoan pottery and frescoes, and with a little imagination, feel what it would have been like to live in ancient Greece.
Note: All additional touring is an extra cost.

Need help deciding which island might be right for you?
Paros and Naxos offer distinct experiences within the Cyclades. Paros is smaller, more compact, and known for its polished harbor towns, strong dining scene, and stylish but relaxed atmosphere. It appeals to couples and small groups seeking coastal beauty, boutique accommodations, watersports, and lively evenings in places like Naoussa. The focus is largely seaside, with easy access to beaches and boat excursions.
Naxos, the largest island in the Cyclades, feels more spacious and grounded in local tradition. In addition to long sandy beaches, it offers mountain villages, hiking, agricultural landscapes, and a culinary identity rooted in local production. Its Venetian Kastro and ancient sites add historical depth. Naxos is well-suited for families, active travelers, and those looking for a broader mix of culture, food, and outdoor exploration.
Santorini is the most iconic and visually dramatic island in the Cyclades. Formed by a volcanic eruption, it is defined by steep caldera cliffs, whitewashed villages perched above the sea, and panoramic sunset views. Towns such as Oia, Fira, and Imerovigli offer sweeping vistas, distinctive architecture, and a strong hospitality infrastructure ranging from luxury cave hotels to boutique properties.
The island has a well-developed tourism economy and receives significant cruise traffic, particularly in peak season. As a result, it can feel busy during midday hours, especially in Fira and Oia. However, outside peak windows—early morning and evening—it offers a quieter, more atmospheric experience.
Beyond the caldera views, Santorini has unique volcanic beaches (black, red, and white sand), well-regarded wineries producing Assyrtiko and other indigenous varieties, and important archaeological sites such as Akrotiri. It appeals strongly to honeymooners and couples seeking dramatic scenery, but it can also work well for travelers interested in geology, wine, and photography.
