Amboseli National Park Adventure Tours

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park lies in southern Kenya near the border with Tanzania, with Mount Kilimanjaro rising dramatically beyond the plains. Although Kilimanjaro itself is in Tanzania, its snow-capped summit provides one of Africa’s most recognizable backdrops and, on clear days, memorable views from Amboseli. The landscape is surprisingly varied, ranging from dry, open plains and seasonal lake beds to wetlands and permanent springs fed by water that travels underground from Kilimanjaro. Amboseli is particularly known for its elephants. Large herds move through the park and surrounding ecosystem, and generations of elephants have been studied here for decades, making Amboseli an important center for elephant research and conservation. Travelers may also encounter lions, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, hippos, and numerous antelope species, while the wetlands attract an impressive variety of birds. What makes Amboseli especially interesting is the relationship between wildlife, water, and people. The park is part of a much larger ecosystem where animals move beyond protected boundaries onto lands traditionally used by Maasai pastoral communities. Seeing elephants crossing the plains beneath Kilimanjaro may be the iconic image of Amboseli, but spending time here also reveals how wildlife depends on migration corridors, seasonal water, and cooperation between parks and surrounding communities. It is this larger landscape that makes Amboseli an important part of understanding conservation in Kenya.
